March Lumber Market Report

Despite poor weather across many key regions, mills have been able to firm and bump up Green Fir framing lumber prices.  Western plywood markets are also firm and rising.  OSB prices are also rising, due to shortages created by transportation issues (snow and rail car shortages).  Keep these factors in mind when quoting new jobs this month.

Energy-efficiency: the remodeling trend that's here to stay

From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Remodeling trends come and go, which is a good thing if you're talking about shag carpet or avocado-colored Formica. But some trends have both staying power and universal appeal, such as the strengthening movement toward homes that are more energy efficient and eco-friendly.

"Demand is high for homes that are not only attractive and comfortable, but also that perform well," says Patrick L. O'Toole, editorial director and publisher of Professional Rebuilder magazine. "Today's homeowners are looking for remodeling options that make their homes more energy-efficient. Cost-savings over the long-term and minimizing a home's environmental footprint make energy-efficient remodeling very appealing to homeowners. At the same time, they're not willing to sacrifice quality design and beauty."

Project Description:

Deck remodel using high-end redwood decking and pressure treated underpinnings.  The deck is accented by redwood benches and freestanding planter boxes fitted with drip line.  A new rain chain water feature and decorative landscaping was added, as well as a redwood trellis.  Deck, benches and planter boxes were first cleaned using a deck brightener and then oiled with Brazilian Rosewood oil and sealed with a natural-color Penofin.  All decking, pressure treated, brackets, color-matched screws, deck brightener, and Penofin deck sealer used in this project was from Big Creek Lumber.
