Big Creek Lumberii Company has a long history of practicing superior forest stewardship - growing, selectively harvesting and milling California redwood since 1946. California redwood is a natural, untreated softwood that is prized for its versatile beauty. It is very workable and is valued for its stability, durability and fire resistance.
Big Creek produces approximately 25 million board feet of redwood lumber annually. We are well known for the quality of product we manufacture and the level of personalized service we provide.
Big Creek’s lumber products have been used to manufacture an amazing array of products ranging from industrial cooling towers to upscale wine racks. The better grades are well suited for moldings, trims, exterior sidings, and sauna parts. The lower grades are typically used for exposed beams, fences, decks and patio furniture.
Product Guide to Big Creek’s Redwoodi
Grades Produced:
Clearii Heart is an exceptional grade that is clear of knots and contains only the durable heartwood that gives redwood its name. It is without peer among softwoods for interior and exterior use.
Clear grade is equivalent to clear heart except that the blond colored sapwood is permitted.
B Gradei is a quality appearance grade that allows for a very limited number of knots and is intended for uses where only 1 face and 1 edge are exposed. Principal uses include trim, molding, fascia, siding and decking. Sapwoodi is permitted.
Big Creek’s Selecti Heart/Heart B is a quality mixed all heart grade. It is typically used for high-end decking, exterior siding, fascia, and patio furniture.
Construction Heart is a versatile, all-purpose, all-heart grade. It is commonly used for fascia, decking, timbers and many other home and garden projects.
Construction Common is similar to Construction Heart except that sapwood is permitted in the grade. It is widely used for decking and fence boards.
#1 Shop Grade is designed to contain at least 60% Clear cuttings. Its uses would include the manufacture of window and door parts.
Merch Heart is a utilitarian all heart grade that is typically used for garden or outdoor applications such as posts, fencing, retaining walls and expansion joints.
Big Creek’s Mill Run typically consists of side cuts from the outer portion of the log and while high in sapwood content, it contains a lot of highly useable grade. Its lower cost lends itself well to a variety of more labor intensive manufactured products such as spa parts, lattice panels and stakes.
Economy is a grade that permits a high level of various defects. It is generally used for boxes, crating and temporary construction.
Sizes Offered:
We primarily cut 2X4 through 2X12, 4X4, 4X6 and 6X6. Our 2” thick rough green lumber is cut at a nominal 1.667”. Our widths are nominally 0.2” short of full dimension. Our 2” and larger surfaced size is standard at 0.5” short of full dimension (surfaced 2X6 nets at 1.5”X5.5”). Our 1” patterns are run at a nominal standard 11/16”. We will also custom cut timbers of up to 20X20 and up to 24’ in length.
Remanufacturing Capabilities:
All of the stock Big Creek produces can be surfaced, profiled, resawn, trimmed, custom pulled, end-waxed or wrapped. While we do not operate dry kilns, we do offer a wide range of air seasoned lumber which can be shipped on or off stickers.
Specialties:
Big Creek produces several different widths of construction grade fence boards, which can be dog-eared on request. We also specialize in high-quality, custom cut timbers. Occasionally, we offer unique curly grain lumber and redwood burl slabs. Nothing at Big Creek’s efficient sawmill goes to waste as all our sawdust, bark and scrap is processed into a premium landscaping mulch.
Shipping:
We generally sell our product in full truckload quantities, Freighti-On-Boardii at our sawmill in Davenport, California. We are willing to load a mix of products on the same load or to sell in Less-Than-Truckload quantities. While Big Creek has no rail access at our mill, we are close to the Port of Oakland and we are able to arrange trucking to a reload facility of your choice at the port. We can paper wrap lumber for extra protection.
